Begun in 1335, and mainly built by two popes, the austere Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI, the papal palace became the largest Gothic building in all of Europe. A visit to this architectural masterpiece, which includes the private apartments with their fabulous frescoes, is an absolute must-do in Avignon.

Avignon's ramparts are the second longest continuous wall in the world, after the Great Wall of China. You can access the walkway via the Rocher des Doms or the Sainte-Anne staircase.
